Sunyoung Bae

Dr. Sunyoung BaeVisual Grid as an Enabling Technology: An overview of what the Visual Grid can do for visualization in our area

Presenter: Dr. Sunyoung Bae — Dr. Sunyoung Bae is an environmental scientist and working as a Senior Research associate at the Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems in the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The various interdisciplinary research opportunities make her link her chemistry to a variety of environmental engineering investigations. Her research activities have focused on a study of emission control, physicochemical interactions of dust particles to stabilize the emission source, amendment of dust suppressant using biomaterials, and human health risk assessment associated with pollution exposure and instrumental analyses of water, soil and air samples.

She has co-authored several research articles and served as a co-guest editor for Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Journal of Hazardous Materials and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment. She has taught the graduate school-level classes at University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Multimedia Tools and Techniques for Visualization: Scientific Visualization Production Structure

Presenter: Stewart Dickson — Stewart Dickson received a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1981 and is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu.

Mr. Dickson has been a programmer of 3D Computer Graphics and Animation since 1984. His first film of 3D vector graphics was produced in 1983. He worked in Hollywood from 1998 to 1995. From 1996 to 2002, he was a Software Technical Director at Walt Disney Feature Animation in Burbank, CA. Since 1990, Stewart Dickson has been publishing lecturing and exhibiting sculpture from 3D computer mathematical visualization.

Stewart Dickson was a Visualization Researcher at the Computer Science and Mathematics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2002 to 2005. During this time, he was also a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Since 2005, he has been a research associate at the National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center and a principal scientific subject matter expert in visualization, Graphics Department, Office of the Director, NOAA National Climatic Data Center. He is also a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

As the market for visualization has steadily grown, Stratos is finding unique market opportunities for visualization in web-based media, print design and animation. Stratos has created multimedia visualizations for the Defense, Manufacturing, Construction, Environmental Science, and Nanotechnology industries. Bryan Freeborn serves on Asheville’s City Council, where he promotes practical policies and advocates a sustainable future for Asheville. He has served on the city’s Transit Commission and has experience working with community members, institutions, and government agencies to address growth issues and develop solutions that are win-win opportunities for all parties. Bryan holds a BA in History from the Evergreen State College and attends Western Carolina University’s Masters in Public Affairs program. He also serves on the French Broad Metropolitan Planning Organization and is Chair of the Asheville Regional Airport Authority.

Presenter: Trevor Lohrbeer, is CEO and Co-Founder of Lab Escape, Inc., a data visualization company based in Asheville, North Carolina. Lab Escape sells heat map visualization solutions that enable managers to make sense of the reams of business data stored in their spreadsheets and databases. Prior to Lab Escape, he was co-founder and CTO of True Peers, Inc., a social networking startup based in New Orleans, LA and prior to that he successfully ran SlamBook.com, a consumer home page add-on service, which he sold in July 1999. He has 16 years of IT experience including four years working in data visualization and nine years developing high-end dynamic web sites.

Aidong Lu

Presenter: Dr. Aidong Lu — Dr. Aidong Lu is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at UNC Charlotte. She received her degree from Purdue University. Her areas of interest are volume visualization, illustrative visualization, and applications.

Dr. Lu has been named an Early Career Principal Investigator in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and High-Performance Networks by the U.S. Department of Energy. The principal goal of this program is to identify exceptionally talented applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and high-performance networks researchers early in their careers and assist and facilitate the development of their research programs. Dr. Lu heads the effort providing 3D visual analysis of multiple, time dependent pollutant fields for the Visual Grid project.

Presenter: David McConville — David McConville is a media artist and researcher specializing in the development of dome-based display technologies. He is co-founder of The Elumenati (www.elumenati.com), a full service design and engineering firm specializing in the development and deployment of immersive visualization environments and experiences. The Elumenati provides systems integration, real-time software design, immersive content research, custom fabrication, and optical engineering for clientele ranging from art festivals to space agencies. David is currently based in Asheville, North Carolina, conducting independent research for the Planetary Collegium (www.planetary-collegium.net).

Mark Phillips

Mark PhillipsThe Culture of Data Visualization and Understanding II

Presenter: Mark Phillips is an independent software developer, (Geometry Technologies, LLC) who focuses on visualization and the use of the web to convey scientific and technical information to a wide variety of audiences. Formerly a mathematics professor, from 1991 until 1998 he was a member of the staff of the Geometry Center, an NSF-funded research and technology center in Minneapolis; he served as manager of the technical staff there from 1996 until 1998. In 1998 he co-founded Geometry Technologies, Inc. which produced WebEQ, the first commercially available product for rendering mathematical equations in web pages.

Since 1998 he has worked as a freelance consultant with projects involving mapping software and display and processing of meteorological data.

Matt Raker

Presenter: Matthew Raker is a founding partner at TopFloorStudio, an Asheville-based interactive communications and web marketing firm. Stemming from a background in systems thinking and analysis, he works at a strategic level with clients to help them identify and develop communications opportunities to grow their business or further their mission. At TopFloorStudio, he also serves as the Creative Director of an excellent creative team with skills ranging from data visualization to web design to podcast production. He is a strong advocate for the appropriate economic development of Western North Carolina; his efforts in this area include serving on Asheville’s Sustainable Economic Development and Advisory Committee and working with numerous regional non-profits. Mike Squires - NCDCNational Climatic Data Center: GIS at NCDC

Presenter: Mike Squires, National Climatic Data Center

NCDC uses Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to visualize and analyze spatial data. NCDC has GIS applications on its web page to help users locate climatological data sets. Scientists at NCDC use GIS to analyze and create datasets as well as mapping results. One of the strengths of this technology is the ability to integrate environmental and demographic datasets to quantify climate's impact on society. NCDC is participating in efforts to make spatial data available in open-source formats to facilitate the greatest possible use of this information.

Barry Wilkinson

Presenter: Barry Wilkinson Professor of Computer Science UNC Charlotte — Dr. Barry Wilkinson is a Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His research interests are in Grid computing. He is the author of five textbooks, four of which are now in their 2nd editions including most recently Parallel Programming: Techniques and Application Using Networked Workstations and Parallel Computers 2nd ed., Prentice Hall (with M. Allen). His many papers have appeared in major computer journals.

Dr. Wilkinson is currently the program director for the Computer Science MS program at UNC-Charlotte. He received his MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from Manchester University, England, in 1971 and 1974 respectively, and the BS degree in Electrical Engineering with first class honors from the University of Salford, England, in 1969. He has been a senior member of the IEEE since 1983.
