Abstract: The RENCI at UNC Asheville Applied Visualization Lab
is providing an exciting opportunity for our community to apply
visualization technologies for disaster response, community planning
and weather and climate issues. This will require a diverse group
of specialists working together on a team to create the visualizations.
The Lab is being fully supported by the HUB, our local economic
development collaborative effort. This means that there are not
only new jobs associated with RENCI, but the possibility for spin-offs
and collaborations as well. AppliedVis 2006 will allow us to highlight
current activities in our area, and discuss future opportunities.
Biographical Information: Jim has worked on various aspects of
visualization in his career. He applied the technologies as a geophysicist
in the oil industry to communicate subsurface geology. He also
developed video content for science specials and government bodies.
More recently, he has developed visualizations for use in kiosks
in national parks and science museum exhibits. His expertise is
in database design, mapping technologies and informal education.
He is most interested in creating visualizations that turn scientific
data into information that a diverse group can understand and utilize
for decision making.
