Abstract: This Panel Discussion, which will involve key local
GIS professionals, will focus on how local GIS data is viewed for
such topics as flood modeling, issues of scale, updated 3D visualizations
of Buncombe County, downtown Asheville 3D visualizations, time-lapse
of Asheville area nighttime lights, mapAsheville, and RENCI and
natural hazard mitigation/planning efforts. The visualization of
GIS data can be critical, especially when providing spatial information
to the public. This discussion will present current methods and
challenges for visualizing local GIS data, as well as present some
current projects that are utilizing these visualization techniques.
Biographical Sketch: Greg Dobson has recently joined the National
Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) team as a GIS
Research Associate. He will be coordinating all GIS efforts with
in the center. Greg Dobson is a recent graduate of Appalachian
State University, where he earned a M.A. in Geography. His thesis
research focused on flood modeling efforts in mountain environments,
utilizing various sources of elevation data and at multiple scales.
He also holds a B.S. in Geography from East Tennessee State University.
Greg Dobson brings over six years of GIS experience to NEMAC. His
research interests include incorporating GIS to study flood modeling,
natural hazards (specifically those related to mountain environments),
and weather and climate (floods, hurricanes, winter weather) and
he is also working on the visualization of these events.
