Session
-- The Culture of Data Visualization and Understanding II: NCDC’s
Climate Data Products, Climate Visualization Production Pipeline
"I wish Visualization were as useful at GIS".
The NOAA National Climatic Data Center in Asheville is the Nation's
repository of weather data. The NCDC serves data in dozens of formats.
Combining multiple data types in the same visualization allows
the viewer to contextualize each type of data and compare one with
the others.
Various types of data require unique conversion and rendering techniques.
What does the ultimate visualization system look like? What features
does it contain? What do current visualization systems need before
they can become useful? Stewart Dickson will present some of the
work he has done to render multiple data sources in a high-quality
3D graphics production
system.
Session — Multimedia Tools and Techniques for Visualization: Scientific
Visualization Production Structure
Scientists speak a language that is greatly removed from the
idiom of the general public. Visualization renders scientific
information accessible. How does the scientist communicate visually
with the public?
Artists are adept at communicating abstract concepts through
visualization. However, the language artists speak is even further
removed from scientific language than is mainstream society.
How do scientists and artists work together? Stewart Dickson
will propose a scientific production team structure after the
model of feature film production.
