The Culture of Data Visualization and Understanding I: Visualizing
Local GIS Data (Panel Discussion)
Presenter: David Abernathy, PhD, Department of Global Studies,
Warren Wilson College
Abstract: This Panel Discussion, which will involve key local
GIS professionals, will focus on how local GIS data is viewed for
such topics as flood modeling, issues of scale, updated 3D visualizations
of Buncombe County, downtown Asheville 3D visualizations, time-lapse
of Asheville area nighttime lights, mapAsheville, and RENCI and
natural hazard mitigation/planning efforts. The visualization of
GIS data can be critical, especially when providing spatial information
to the public. This discussion will present current methods and
challenges for visualizing local GIS data, as well as present some
current projects that are utilizing these visualization techniques.

Biographical Sketch: David Abernathy teaches geography and geographical
information systems in the Department of Global Studies at Warren
Wilson College. He manages a GIS work crew of three students who
run the GIS lab at Warren Wilson, and he collaborates on research
projects with the college's Environmental Leadership Center. He
earned a PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, focusing
on the historical disease ecology of the Panama Canal Zone. His
current research interests are in data management and visualization
for sustainable growth and development, open source and participatory
GIS, and Latin American political ecology.
